Short answer: for a daily driver in Brisbane, book a professional detail every three to four months, with a proper wash every two to three weeks in between. That schedule keeps paint, trim and interior in genuinely good condition rather than just looking passable from a distance.
The longer answer depends on how you use the car, where it lives and what Brisbane's climate is quietly doing to it. Here is how I advise my own customers across the Bayside, the Redlands and Brisbane South.
Why Brisbane Is Harder on Cars Than You Think
Three local factors age a car faster here than in most of the country:
- UV exposure. Queensland sun is brutal on clear coat, plastics and interior trim. Unprotected paint oxidises and dashboards crack years earlier than they should.
- Salt air. If you live bayside, from Wynnum through Cleveland to Victoria Point, salt sits on your paint and in your door jambs every single day. Salt accelerates corrosion and dulls unprotected paint.
- Storm season. Summer storms drive dust, tree sap and contaminated rain onto paintwork. Water spots baked on by the next morning's sun etch into clear coat if they are not removed.
Detailing Schedules by How You Use the Car
Daily driver, parked outside
A full detail every three months, wash every fortnight. Outdoor cars cop UV, bird droppings, sap and salt without a break. A Full Detail ($390 to $450) quarterly, with a $119 Mini Detail in between if the interior works hard, keeps the car protected year-round.
Daily driver, garaged
A full detail every four to six months and washes every two to three weeks. A garage removes the worst UV and overnight dew, which slows paint degradation significantly. Most garaged cars in my run sit comfortably on a twice-a-year Full Detail with a Mini Detail at the halfway mark.
Family car with kids or pets
The exterior schedule stays the same but the interior needs more attention. Crumbs, spills and dog hair ground into carpet do lasting damage between annual cleans. An Interior Detail ($199 to $229) every four months keeps seats and carpet from staining permanently. Dog hair removal is a $40 add-on if the back seat belongs to the labrador.
Work ute or trade vehicle
Quarterly interior details at minimum. Site dust, sunscreen on the steering wheel and hi-vis dye on the seats build up faster than any family car. The Exterior Wash + Interior Detail combo ($260 to $290) every three months is the most cost-effective way to keep a work vehicle presentable for clients.
Weekender or prestige car
Condition-based rather than calendar-based. A garaged weekend car might only need two details a year, but it deserves a higher grade of work: a Prestige Detail ($599 to $699) or, better, ceramic coating so wash days become trivially easy. If the car matters to you, protection beats correction every time.
The Signs You Have Left It Too Long
- Water no longer beads on the bonnet after rain
- The paint feels rough or gritty under a clean hand
- Swirl marks visible in direct sunlight
- A smell the air freshener no longer hides
- Headlights turning yellow or cloudy
Any of these means the car needs correction, not just a wash. Rough paint needs a clay bar and polish, swirls need machine correction ($349 to $499 as a Full Cut and Polish), and cloudy headlights need restoration ($50 as an add-on).
Can You Stretch the Schedule With Protection?
Yes, significantly. Paint protection changes the maintenance equation:
- Sealant wax (included in polish packages) buys three to four months of protection per application.
- Ceramic coating protects for years, sheds dirt and water on its own, and turns a full wash into a twenty-minute job. Read how ceramic coating works here.
Most of my ceramic customers move from quarterly details to one or two maintenance details a year, which pays back a fair chunk of the coating cost in reduced upkeep.
The Realistic Bottom Line
If you remember one schedule: wash fortnightly, detail quarterly, correct annually. Adjust up for bayside salt air, outdoor parking, kids, pets and site work. Adjust down for a garage and a gentle life.
